Farewell from the Chair

This Newsletter will be the last one where I am writing to you as the ILAC Chair and thus, this is my letter of goodbye to all of you in my present role. I shall be retiring from Swedac at the end of November 2018. Whether there will be any professional challenges after that, is written in the stars. In the meanwhile, I shall focus on my bucket list of hobbies and other things I have been wishing to do.

In a time where we obtain information as it happens, social media has become the way to transmit information not only to our community but also to the stakeholders and media. Press releases are a valuable tool in generating earned media coverage and in-building brand awareness and credibility. The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) has also incorporated social media as is the new way audience consumes information today.

Update from ISO/CASCO

The ISO Committee on Conformity Assessment (ISO/CASCO) is currently revising 4 documents and working on new standards, including sector specific competence requirements and requirements for new activities, such as validation/verification. In collaboration with ISO/TC85, CASCO will shortly start the development of ISO/TS 23406, a sector application of ISO/IEC 17021-1 for the nuclear field.

AFRAC MRA Internationally Recognised

AFRAC (African Accreditation Cooperation) achieved recognition status to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Multi-Lateral Arrangement (MLA) on the 22nd May 2018.

ASCOLAB Mineral PT Scheme Launched

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the mining sector is a significant contributor to the world’s production of Cobalt, Copper, Zinc, Diamond, Iron, Tantalum, Tin and Gold and is the largest source of export income. For instance that sector in the DRC’s Gross Domestic Product increased from 18 % in 2010 to 25 % in 2015 (Source: Statistics of Ministry of Finance/DRC).

AOAC Leading in Analytical Excellence

On August 26–29, 2018, during the AOAC Annual Meeting and Exposition in Toronto, Canada, more than 800 key experts, international authorities, and other appropriate stakeholders from industry, government, and academia had a voice in setting standards and finding the best, fit-for-purpose methods that are globally recognized and accepted. Major outcomes included new methods and standards for infant formula, food safety, dietary supplements, and alternative methods.
