2018 has been an exciting and rewarding year for the Mauritius Accreditation Service (MAURITAS). On 28 September 2018, the African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC), during its 9th General Assembly and Meetings, approved MAURITAS’s admission as an arrangement member to the AFRAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). AFRAC, the Regional Accreditation Cooperation for the African continent, gained recognition by IAF and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) in May 2018. Consequently, MAURITAS was de facto recognized by the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) and ILAC MRA.
MAURITAS achieved signatory status to the AFRAC MRA for the following scopes:
- Testing (ISO/IEC 17025:2005),
- Calibration (ISO/IEC 17025:2005), and
- Certification (ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015) for the sub-scope of QMS (ISO 9001:2015 / ISO/IEC TS 17021-3:2013).

On 17 October 2018, MAURITAS was admitted as a signatory member to the IAF MLA. A certificate of recognition was presented to the Director of MAURITAS on 30 October 2018 during the 2018 Joint IAF-ILAC Annual Meetings.

The foundations of MAURITAS were laid following the adoption of the MAURITAS Act by the National Assembly in December 1998. Since then, MAURITAS has focused on establishing comprehensive accreditation schemes in line with international accreditation standards. Following a robust peer evaluation and with the unrelenting effort of the team, MAURITAS accomplished its vision: “Achieving International Recognition”. The international recognition of MAURITAS is a key milestone to enable integration of Mauritius as a country in the world trade system, whereby eliminating Technical Barriers to Trade.
To date, MAURITAS has accredited 23 testing laboratories, 3 calibration laboratories and 1 certification body. A further 6 medical laboratories have also been accredited by MAURITAS.
The 9th AFRAC General Assembly and Meetings was held in Mauritius, from 22- 28 September 2018, under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection. The meeting was attended by 31 delegates representing various economies and regional accreditation bodies from the African region.

Looking ahead to 2019 and the near future, MAURITAS will continue to carry out its mandate and maintain its scope of signatory status for the accreditation schemes it currently operates.
