Update from MAURITAS

APPLICATION TO BECOME A SIGNATORY TO THE MULTILATERAL MUTUAL RECOGNITION ARRANGEMENTS OF ILAC/IAF/AFRAC/SADCA

The Mauritian economy is moving rapidly from a system based on trade preferences to one based on global competition. Many national agencies involved in conformity assessment infrastructure are helping in eliminating technical barriers to trade.

So to ensure that the Mauritius Accreditation Service (MAURITAS) accredited certificates issued by conformity assessment bodies are accepted across all borders, MAURITAS applied to become signatory to the Multilateral/Mutual Recognition Arrangements of ILAC/IAF/AFRAC/SADCA in July 2015.

MAURITAS provided the requisite documentation which was reviewed and accepted by the evaluation team prior to the on-site pre-evaluation.

ILAC and IAF appointed an evaluation team on 02 December 2015 comprising of:

• Mr Alok Jain – Team Leader (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, NABL)

• Mrs Maureen Mutasa – Team Member (Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service, SADCAS)

• Mrs Sonia Mahdoui Melki – Team Member (Tunisian Accreditation Council, TUNAC)

• Prof. Adel Shehata – Trainee Evaluator for Testing (National Institute of Standards, Egypt)

The pre evaluation visit took place from 21 to 25 March 2016. During the evaluation, both the MAURITAS office and the apex body representing the National Metrological Infrastructure were visited by the evaluation team.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, MAURITAS Staff and the Pre-evaluation team

The following accreditation assessments were witnessed by the evaluation team:

(i) Testing: 1 re-assessment (2 days; chemical, environmental & biological testing)

(ii) Calibration: 1 surveillance (1 day; mass)

(iii) Management System Certification Body: 1 surveillance (1 day; QMS)

The evaluation team raised seven (7) non-conformities, seven (7) concerns and fourteen (14) comments. Proposed corrective actions were made and submitted to the evaluation team in April 2016.  A first response has been obtained from the team. MAURITAS has started implementing the corrective actions and will submit the documented evidence to the team of evaluators by the end of June 2016.
