NABET Update
Accreditation of first Conformity Assessment Body for Certification of Persons (ISO/IEC 17024 : 2012)

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and requires approximately 120 million additional skilled workers until 2022 to boost both the manufacturing and service sectors. The National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET) is supporting the economy to achieve skill development goals in India. An accreditation scheme for Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) is now in place per the requirements of ISO/IEC 17024:2012 to establish an internationally accepted benchmark for organizations assessing and evaluating the skills of persons. The main objective is to raise confidence, improve quality and give direction through enhanced skill competence to personnel as per global norms.

The scheme for accreditation of assessment bodies as per ISO/IEC 17024 was launched by NABET in March 2016. A number of awareness programmes have been conducted to popularise the scheme. Trainings for assessors were conducted and subject matter experts have been identified.  Since then a number of applications have been received in various domains like Welders, Electricians, Fitters, Safety professionals, Gym trainers, Sewing machine operators etc., and two CAB’s have been granted accreditation. Indian Institute of Welding, Kolkata (India) is the first Conformity Assessment Body, granted accreditation under the scheme in August 2016, and the second accreditation was granted to Quality Austria Central Asia (QACA).

Peer Evaluator Training

NABET recently participated in a Peer Evaluator Training Workshop conducted by the Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (PAC) in New Delhi, along with participants from various other economies in the Pacific Region. Three NABET participants successfully attained the status of Trainee Peer Evaluator.

Membership in the International Accreditation Forum (IAF)

NABET acquired membership in the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) on 14 July 2016. The membership certificate was presented by Mr.  Xiao Jianhua, IAF Chairman, to Mr. Vipin Sahni, NABET CEO, on 3 November 2016 during the Joint Annual Meetings of IAF and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) held at New Delhi.

Awareness Workshop on ISO/IEC 17024: 2012

Awareness Workshops have been conducted for CABs and NABET staff on ISO/ IEC 17024:2012. As the world and India needs a skilled workforce, NABET successfully conveyed the message that alignment with global standards and best practices will add value to CABs. The response from the participants was very positive and more of these are planned to be conducted in the near future.
